Do you not think maybe the flashback in attack on titan episode 6, the one you posted about, was in the anime because it was also in the manga? I personally haven't read the manga but that could be the reason he decided to include it

[VAGUELY SPOILERY] The problem is that Eren is a really wrong place to look for an "ordinary people pushed to the extreme by extraordinary circumstances" arc. Which isn't to say that sort of arc doesn't exist (Jean, Armin, and Sasha come to mind) but it'll quickly become clear that Eren isn't someone you can afford to treat as an ordinary person. Eren killing two guys in cold blood is supposed to be at least a little horrifying at any rate.

I guess the problem then is there’s not enough of Eren being normal because once the first episode is done there’s the trauma of watching his mother being eaten by a Titan kicking his drive into high gear to justify some of his more irrational actions.

Have you read the manga portion of this? they were there because Mikasa's mother is the last oriental. It was human trafficking gone wrong and they took Mikasa because half oriental is better than none so they still get paid. The slavers/murderers themselves showed no personal interest in the girl, and the threat of rape was distant, not imminent. It's a complete misunderstanding of what the scene is about. Also, Eren killing the guys is not cold-blooded. They deserved it.

-I have not, but even if that were the case, it should be able to stand on its own without the additional context the manga might provide.

-Even if the sexual nature of the aggression is debatable, I feel like even bringing up the possibility of sex was completely unnecessary and brought in a nasty undercurrent that I want no part of.

-Plus, it’s still somewhat fucking hokey, unless the human trafficking thing comes back up later, which I wouldn’t know about.

-Maybe “cold-blooded” is the wrong word. Deserved or not, it still felt really unnecessary, and the point of the scene about Eren always being willing to throw himself in dangerous situations for the sake of others could be, and in fact has been, made without the pathos of actually killing someone. Basically, it makes Eren even more special and badass, when part of the appeal of the show is that no one is that special and badass until they are pushed to that by the extraordinary threat of the Titans.

it is, and that’s why it is mondo fucked up when it’s used a cheap way to jazz up a female character’s backstory instead of using an actual good and original and smart character arc like “my best friend since childhood has started an impossible crusade against an opponent that cannot be defeated and is likely going to die in the process and I am wrestling with my feelings on the matter”

It’s bullshit. Like, saying I hated it is way overstating it, but it really soured the whole thing. Maybe not as far as to ruin the show entirely, but that flashback is pretty much bullshit and I hate it and I have to write things down so I don’t forget.

So, first thing : what I like about Attack on Titan is the giant double-bluff. The “You think they’ll succeed, but then they don’t, but you still think they will the next time”. It’s extremely fucking smart about a lot of things. It’s not your generic story about teens fighting back impossible odds. I’ll go back to that in a bit.

How fucking hacky a writer do you have to be to still think “Man, you know what would make this strong female character that bit more badass? If somehow she had been under the threat of sexual assault at one point in her childhood and survived.”

And that’s exactly what fucking happens to Mikasa in that fucking flashback. And FUCK it’s the fucking worst, you don’t need that ever and you expect better of a show that was that fucking smart.

So right there, there’s one character ruined.

But then, Eren shows up to save her (already this is all kinds of fucking problematic for all sorts of reason) (namely that it makes her a damsel in distress, in case you weren’t following), but right then and there he murders a couple of dudes.

The key of what makes Attack on Titan tick with me is this idea of ordinary people pushed to the extreme by extraordinary circumstances. That’s what makes Eren’s arc in the past five episodes so great. He’s just a regular kid with a strong moral fiber and a will to fight for what’s right, pushed to the limit by a very traumatic event, namely seeing his mom turned into fucking Titan food.

But when that flashback is done? Turns out he already murdered two guys in cold fucking blood. And that Mikasa took care of the third one.

And bam, the spell is fucking broken. They’re not ordinary teens anymore. They’re just two more badass anime protagonists in a sea of them.

And that fucking sucks, and maybe there’s a point to it but it left a real fucking sour taste in my mouth and I had to get it out and there it’s done.
